Stitch Fabric Fit

Over one or over two?

The count describes the fabric. The stitch-over setting describes how many fabric intervals each stitch spans.

The sizing rule

For each direction: stitched inches = chart stitches × stitch-over setting ÷ fabric count per inch. Then add your finishing margin twice, once for each edge.

For standard Aida, use the number of squares per inch and over one. For evenweave stitched across two threads, enter its thread count and over two. Do not halve the count and also choose over two; that doubles the adjustment.

Choose your own finishing allowance

Three inches per side is the calculator’s example, not a requirement for every project. Hoops, lacing, frames, ornaments and sewing finishes may need different allowances. Ask your finishing instructions or framer what to reserve.

The suggested cut rounds upward to the next quarter inch or half centimetre. Smaller displayed measurements may be rounded for readability. The fit check uses the unrounded values.

Sources and limits

The base stitch-count relationship is also shown in Yarn Tree’s fabric-size chart and Scarlet Quince’s fabric calculator guide. Our separate-axis calculation applies that relationship to each direction. It does not model shrinkage, stretch, fabric defects or stitching tension.
